20 Composite-operation primitives

This chapter develops the abstract primitives and properties needed to address the quadratic complexity identified in 14.3 Quadratic complexity. It extends the notation for vector times and defines factorisation, composite-operation representations, the precedes relation and generalised symmetric merge.
